What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a fairly new area of medicine that focuses on repairing diseased or damaged tissue by creating new, healthier living tissue through the stimulation of your body’s own natural healing power. Orthopaedic experts, like those at Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, have been on the forefront of regenerative medicine for many years, developing various strategies to help heal bones, cartilage, and ligaments with cell therapy.

What Treatments are Considered Regenerative Medicine?

Cell therapy is the most common type of regenerative medicine, and includes stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Stem Cell Therapy: Stem cells are the undifferentiated cells in your body, which means the cells have the ability to transform themselves into any cell your body needs. In regenerative medicine, stem cells are injected into injured tissue to help regenerate new, healthier tissue, muscle, blood vessels, and nerves to fully restore function.

Platelet-Rich Plasma: PRP is a blood product made from a sample of your own blood that’s rich in the platelets and growth factors that support body healing. After blood is drawn from your arm, it is placed in a centrifuge that separates the liquid portion from the solid portion to create the concentrated therapeutic blood. PRP is then injected into your diseased or injured body part and the platelets and growth factors work on healing the tissue.
